Before LAMB's Basket establishment in 2002, Lakeside area churches all had smaller food pantries of their own. However, when Christ Lutheran Church's food pantry began receiving referrals from Henrico County Social Services in 1999, it didn't take long before the church was no longer able to meet the county's high demand. Christ Lutheran's Pastor Eric Moehring then coordinated an initiative among Lakeside area churches and pastors to form a larger food pantry that would be able to serve those in need more efficiently. After two years of planning and a generous grant from Overbrook Presbyterian Church, LAMB's Basket opened in 2002 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. (LAMB is an acronym for Lakeside Area Ministries Board.)
LAMB's Basket aims to provide food to the needy families of Henrico County. Our patrons are referred to us by area churches, the Central Virginia Food Bank, Catholic Charities, Henrico County Social Services, the United Way, and other organizations.
Donations and grants from churches, individuals, and organizations stock LAMB's Basket. Perishable and nonperishable food items are donated by JCC, Food Lion and Entenmann's. In addition, LAMB's Basket is a community project for the Glenn Allen Ruritans and Tyson Foods. Donations are also received from the Henrico Christmas Mother.
Patrons are welcome at LAMB's Basket twice a month for the first six months then need to reapply. The disabled and the elderly may continue coming twice a month as long as is needed.
Elderly patrons are referred to Senior Connections, which provides different services for seniors. We also refer people to Catholic Charitites and the United Way. Information on employment is also available.
